Kacey's understanding of water quality issues in the Santee River Basin:

"I understand that the Santee River is the second largest river on the eastern coast of the United States.  The Santee River Basin is a portion of land drained by the river and other tributaries.  Everyone lives in a river basin; if we do not live near the water then we live on land that drains to a river, and our actions on the land affect water quality and quantity.  With rapidly growing population, more pollution is a problem, along with pesticide use increasing everyday.  This becoming a problem when the bacteria and nutrients enter the water through leakages in swere lines and other waste.  As a result of the bacteria entering the water increases the loading of the nutrients  to streams, making the river an unstable living environment for plants, animals, and even humans."
